Lions baseball travels to Franklin College in two game set

FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Mount St. Joseph University baseball team played a two game set against Franklin College on Saturday at McDowell Field. Game one was decided in the final inning as the Grizzlies walked home the winning run for a final of 2-1. Game two featured an eight run second inning for Franklin that led to an 11-1 victory.

Game 1

Pitching game one for the Lions was Alex Wagner (West Chester, OH / Lakota West) and his line included three strikeouts, one unearned run off six hits and seven innings in the loss. Relieving Wagner was Wyatt Myers (Waynesville, OH / Waynesville) who went an inning and two thirds, allowing one earned run off two hits and two base on balls.

Franklin was first to score in the bottom half of the sixth with a single down the right field line that scored one. The Lions would answer with an RBI single up the middle from Garrett Hogan (Hamilton, OH / Badin) to tie the score at 1 apiece.

With bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth Franklin would win the game off a walk and a final score of 2-1.

Game 2

The Mount was first on the board after a fielding error by the Grizzlies left fielder bringing home Luke Bowman (Harrison, OH / Harrison). The Lions offense was stalled after that not reaching home plate again for the rest of the game.

Starting on the mound was Jason Fischer (Cincinnati, OH / Colerain) for the Lions who went an inning and a third, striking out two, and allowing six earned runs off four hits in his fourth loss of the season. Fischer was followed by Chris Honebrink (Cincinnati, OH / Roger Bacon), Jacob Hughes (Cincinnati, OH / LaSalle), Mike Hilliard (Loveland, OH / Clinton Massie), Nick Gunnell (Hamilton, OH / Fairfield), and Brady Johnson (Peebles, OH / Peebles HS).

Franklin was able to score 11 runs for the game off thirteen hits. Four Grizzlies recorded multiple hit games and Ryan Bixler led the charge with three RBI's for the day.

The Lions fall to 4-9 in the HCAC and 13-19 overall for the year. Franklin improves to 13-1 in conference play and 31-2 overall and remains atop the HCAC standings.

The Lions next game will be this Tuesday, May 1st at Florence Freedom as they host the Defiance Yellow Jackets for another doubleheader. Game one is scheduled for 2 PM and game two at 5 PM.
