Mount host doubleheader with visiting Bluffton

AMELIA, Ohio – The Mount St. Joseph University baseball team hosted the Beavers of Bluffton in a doubleheader on Friday. The Lions were first to score in game one and finished with a final score of 6-2, Lions. Game two was another solid game from the Lions as they defeated the Beavers 5-2.

Game 1

The Lions sent Junior ace Alex Wagner (West Chester, OH / Lakota West) to the mound in game one. Wagner went 8 1/3 innings with 6 strikeouts, allowing 3 runs off 6 hits and now leads the Lions in innings pitched with 52 1/3.

The Lions hung a two-spot in the 2nd inning off a throwing error by the Beaver's short stop.

In the bottom of the third, Garrett Hogan (Hamilton, OH / Badin) would lay down a sacrifice bunt to advance two runners to second and third with one out. Jose Bustamante (Austell, GA / South Cobb) was due up next and singled through the left side to bring home a run. The Lions would score two more runs in the inning.

Bluffton scored their only two in the top of the 4th off 3 hits.

The Lions final run came in the form of a 1 out, solo home run coming from first basemen Roman Rothwell (Monroe, OH / Monroe) in the 6th inning, resulting in a final score of 6-2. Rothwell leads the Lions with four homeruns for the 2018 season.

Game 2

Toeing the rubber in game two for the Lions was Freshman Jason Fischer (Cincinnati, OH / Colerain). In route to his second win, Fischer pitched 7 strong innings, striking out 10, and allowing only one earned run in the night cap.

The Lions were first to score off an RBI sacrifice bunt from Hogan in the 3rd inning. The Beavers retaliated with a single run in the top of the 4th.

The Lions took the lead in the bottom half of the 5th with 2 runs off 2 hits and multiple errors from the Beavers.

After two lead-off walks from Fischer in the 6th and no outs, the Beavers were posed to tie the game or take the lead. Fischer came up huge with two critical strikeouts that halted the Beavers scoring opportunity in the inning.

In the top half of the 7th inning, the Beavers would score off an RBI double to left center. The Lions defense executed well by throwing out the hitter at third as he was trying to extend his double into a triple. Up 3-2, the Lions answered with an RBI double from Luke Bowman (Harrison, OH / Harrison) scoring Simon Schaefer (Cincinnati, OH / St. Xavier).

Senior Wyatt Myers (Waynesville, OH / Waynesville) came into the game in the 8th and provided the Lions with a solid relief effort. Myers sealed the 8th inning and recorded an out in the 9th as well. Hogan came in to close out the 9th, recording 2 strikeouts, achieving his third save on the season and a Lions 5-2 victory.  

Your Lions move to 12-12 overall and 3-4 in the HCAC play. Bluffton falls to 15-12 for the year and 4-6 in conference play.

The Lions next games are at Earlham College where they will face off in a doubleheader with the Quakers. Game is scheduled for Tuesday 17th, with first pitch of game one at 4 PM and 7 PM for game two. Make sure to check MSJsports.com for all your Lions updates!
