The College of Mount St. Joseph softball team ended their 2013 home slate of games on Saturday afternoon, dropping two hard-fought games to the Franklin College Grizzlies, 7-4 and 6-3. The Lions go to 6-24 overall, 3-11 in the HCAC and will play their season finale on April 28 with a conference twin-bill at Anderson University.
Game one today against Franklin College saw the Lions roll out to a 3-0 advantage after two innings, but they would surrender the lead in the third inning when Franklin struck for four runs - with three coming on a home run. The Grizzlies would add another run in the fourth, but the Lions would cut the deficit to 5-4 in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Sami Ives (Erlanger, KY/St. Henry). Franklin added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, to make the score 7-4, as they held the Mount scoreless down the stretch, stranding one Mount runner on base. The Lions led the way with 11 hits as a team, with four different players picking up two hits each, including Taylor McElhinny (Crestwood, KY/Oldham County), who added a double. McElhinny, one of three Mount pitchers in the game, was tagged with the loss.
In game two, the two teams entered the bottom of the fifth inning tied at one-all, but the Lions pushed across two unearned runs to grab a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth. That was all the scoring the Mount would do the rest of the game as the visitors added three runs in the sixth inning, and two more runs in the seventh to post the come-from-behind win. Mallory Wright (Germantown, OH/Valley View) and Becky Owens (Cincinnati, OH/Dater) each collected two hits for the Lions, while Kim McElhinny (Crestwood, KY/Oldham County) suffered the pitching setback, allowing just two earned runs.
