Host Rose-Hulman got a strong pitching performance, and clutch hitting on Saturday, while stranding Mount runners on base in key innings, and the Engineers completed a two-game sweep over the Lions, 8-2 and 4-1. The Lions fall to 4-22 overall, 1-9 in the HCAC, and will play a doubleheader at Hanover College on April 23.
Rose-Hulman jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning in game one, while the Mount cut the deficit to 3-2, as Taylor McElhinny (Crestwood, KY/Oldham County) and Lindsay Griffith (Alexandria, KY/Bishop Brossart) each recorded an RBI. That would be all the scoring, however, the Lions would do in the game, as the Engineers added five runs in the sixht inning, with four coming on a grand slam home run, to lead, 8-2. The Mount left 10 runners, on base in the game, including five in the last three innings.
McElhinny took the loss, pitching 5 1/3 innings with her record going to 3-6 on the season. Mallory Wright (Germantown, OH/Valley View), Tanya Sefton (Vevay, IN/Switzerland County), and Paige Norton (Cincinnati, OH/Reading) each had two hits, with Norton adding a walk. The Lions were one-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
Game two saw both teams produce eight hits each, and the Mount grab a 1-0 lead in the second inning, when Megan James (Villa Hills, KY/Dixie Heights) singled in Kim McElhinny (Crestwood, KY/Oldham County). Rose-Hulman scored three times in the fourth inning and added another run in the fifth inning, on a home run, to produce a 4-1 lead. The Mount, however, would strand three runners on the base the last two innings of the game, and left seven runners on base during the game. Kim McElhinny led the offense with two hits. Leslie Biggs (Harrison, OH/Harrison) was the starting pitcher for the Mount in the second game, and tossed 3 1/3 innings before giving way to Kim McElhinny.
