Defiance College stopped a Mount seventh inning rally in the first game, and then blanked the Lions in the second game, as they recorded a doubleheader sweep at the Mount on Sunday, winning 6-5 and 8-0 (five innings). The Mount, 4-18 overall, 1-7 in the HCAC, will return to action on April 17 when they host a Senior Night doubleheader against Centre College.
In game one, the Yellow Jackets led 5-1 after hitting in the fourth inning, but the Mount cut the deficit to 5-3 in the bottom of the inning, with the first run coming in on an RBI double by Kim McElhinny (Crestwood, KY/Oldham County) and the other on an unearned run. Defiance added a run in the top of the seventh inning, making the score 6-3. Tanya Sefton (Vevay, IN/Switzerland County) singled in Paige Norton (Cincinnati, OH/Reading), for one run, and pinch-runner Katie Mitchell (Columbus, OH/Westerville North) scored on a throwing error, on the same play, with two outs, but Sefton was stranded on base as the game ended.
Norton, Sefton, McElhinny and Mallory Wright (Germantown, OH/Valley View) each collected two hits in the game, as the Lions out-hit Defiance, 12-9. Taylor McElhinny (Crestwood, KY/Oldham County) was the starting pitcher for the Mount, pitching 6 2/3 innings and absorbing the loss.
Defiance scored four runs in the first inning of game two, off Kim McElhinny, en route to the run-rule shortened win over the Lions. Danielle Hausfeld (Wilder, KY/Newport Central Catholic), also pitched for the Lions, her second appearance of the day. The Mount got one hit from four different players in the game, including a double by Megan James (Villa Hills, KY/Dixie Heights).
