The Lions slipped to 3-7 on the young season on Saturday after suffering a doubleheader home loss to Denison University, 6-0 and 11-1. The Mount is slated to return to action on March 27 when they play at cross-river rival Thomas More College.
Game one against the Big Red saw the Lions fall behind by a 3-0 score in the first inning, after a three-run home run. Denison added three more runs in the third inning, as neither team would score the rest of the game. The Lions collected three hits in the game, with Mount pitcher Taylor McElhinny (Crestwood, KY/Oldham County) recording two of those, and teammate Mallory Wright (Germantown, OH/Valley View) adding a hit. The Lions left five runners on base, as they suffered their second shutout of the season. McElhinny tossed a complete game, as her record went to 2-1 on the season.
Game two ended in after the fifth inning due to the run rule, as Denison led by a 3-0 score after three innings of action and added an eight-run fourth inning. The Lions were held hitless in the nightcap, and recorded just a walk from Pam Wisniewski (Florence, KY/Boone County). Lions' pinch runner Nikki Martin (Amelia, OH/Amelia) scored the Lions lone run in the game in third inning. Martin, who pinch-ran for Wisniewski, was sacrified to second on a bunt by Claire Wehby (Mason, OH/Mason), and scored on a throwing error on the same play by a Denison infielder. Erica D'Arcy (Fairfield, OH/Fairfield) started for the Mount and took the pitching loss.
