The College of Mount St. Joseph softball team opened 2013 season play in Kissimmee, FL on Sunday, in their annual Spring Break trip, splitting two extra-inning match-ups. The Lions lost the first game, 10-9 in nine innings to Webster University; and then won later in the day in nine innings of action, 6-5 over Sage College, The Mount, 1-1 on the season was slated to play again on March 11 with a morning game against Washington (MD) College and then a game against Millikin University.
The Lions jumped out to a 6-1 lead after three inings against Webster University, thanks two-run RBI singles by both Paige Norton (Cincinnati, OH/Reading) and Ashley Moore (Cincinnati, OH/Northwest). They pushed their lead to 8-2 after four innings, before Webster University made a comeback to knot the score at eight-all in the seventh inning. Norton put the Lions ahead 8-7 in the top of the eight inning on an RBI single, only to see the Lions' opponent tie the score in the bottom of the inning. Webster, which held the Mount off the scoreboard in the top of the ninth inning, scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the frame when after their courtesy runner was placed on second to start the inning (due to the international tie rule), singled her to third and plated her with a sacrifice fly RBI.
Norton led the Mount with three hits and two runs scord while Moore added two hits and teammate Claire Wehby (Mason, OH/Mason) scored twice. Kim McElhinny (Crestwood, KY/Oldham County) was the Lions' starting pitcher, and she was relieved by Danielle Hausfeld (Wilder, Ky/Newport Central Catholic) and Erica D'Arcy (Fairfield, OH/Fairfield), who suffered the loss. The Mount left 11 runners on base.
The Mount claimed its first win of the season later in the day against Sage College, getting out to a 2-0 lead by the fourth inning, as Norton and Taylor McElhinny (Crestwood, KY/Oldham County) each had RBI hits. The Mount led 4-3 after four innings of action, while Sage tied the score at four-all in the fifth inning, and led 5-4 at the end of six innings. Norton tied the game again, this time at five-all with an RBI single in the seventh. Neither team was able to score their courtesy runner in the eighth inning, and the Lions, which held Sage scoreless in the ninth inning, won the game in the bottom of the inning. Katie Gregg (Walton, KY/Grant County), the courtesy runner on second, was sacrificed to third by Megan Erdman (Ft. Mitchell, KY/Dixie Heights) and scored the game-winner when Sage committed an error on a ground ball off the bat of Tanya Sefton (Vevay, IN/Switzerland County).
Moore scored two runs in the game while Norton added two more hits to her season total. Taylor McElhinny tossed a complete game, allowing just three earned runs while recording eight strikeouts.
