Mount sophomore setter Luke Eschenbach (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle) has been named Continental Volleyball Conference Player of the Week after a record-setting weekend at Thiel College.
The 6-foot-1 Lions’ player recorded 123 assists in just two matches, leading the Mount to a 3-2 win against Eastern Mennonite University and a close 3-2 loss to Thiel College, both CVC East Division teams. Eschenbach set the Mount single-match record with 60 assists against EMU, and then shattered his own record with 63 assists in the Thiel match.
Against Eastern Mennonite, he added 11 digs and one service ace and then had 14 digs and two service aces against Thiel. Eschenbach finished the week averaging 12.3 assists per set and currently leads the CVC in assists per set.
“Luke was tremendous this weekend, but it wasn’t just the amazing number of assists that made his weekend special,’’ Head Coach Ryan Lengerich said. “He willed this team to victory in the first match, and led the team back from a 2-0 deficit against a strong Thiel team. He did exactly what you expect a captain
and a floor leader to do. He didn’t let his teammates give up in two, grueling matches.”
Eschenbach is the second Mount player in program history to win the weekly award. Freshman outside hitter Alex Vohland (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) won the award in week two of this season.
