Lions' men's volleyball team drops first two matches at MSJ Invitational

The Mount kicked off its 2014 season under first-year Head Coach Ryan Lengerich on Saturday afternoon, taking on two opponents in the MSJ Invitational. The Lions fell to Lees-McRae College, 3-1, and to Missouri Valley College, 3-0. The Mount, 0-2 on the season, will compete in the second day on Jan. 19 with matches against Rust College and Lourdes University.

The Lions grabbed a 25-23 in their first set of the season, against Lees-McRae College. They, however, dropped the final three sets, 21-25, 19-25, and 14-25. Alex Vohland (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) led the Mount offense with 14 kills while teammate Cesar Trigo de Serrano (Miami, FL/Christopher Columbis) added 12 kills. The Lions recorded 47 kills in the match, and a solid .270 hitting percentage. They were hindered by 15 service errors and eight reception errors. Luke Eschenbach (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle) added 41 assists and four digs, while teammate Zach Kuebler (Columbus, OH/Christopher Columbus) had a team-high six digs. Trigo de Serrano had a block solo and block assist and Brett Cooper (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle) had two block assists. Lees-McRae had 45 kills, a .382 hitting percentage and eight service aces.

In the day's second match for the Lions, Missouri Valley College improved to 4-0 on the season by posting set scores of 25-11, 25-20, 25-18 over the Mount. The Vikings out-hit the Lions, .301 to .011, registering 38 kills and 20 block assists. The Mount was paced by Vohland's ten kills. Toby Birnbrich (Anthem, AZ/Boulder Creek) and Kuebler had five kills apiece. Birnbrich also had four block assists while Alec King (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle0 had a game-high tying eight digs. Eschenbach added 24 assists.
