The College of Mount St. Joseph men's golf team finished ninth at the DePauw Small College Classic co-hosted at Deer Creek Golf Club and Twin Bridges Golf Club in Indiana. Two Lions finished tied for 17th, while the other three Lions who recorded a team score finished outside the top 50. The Lions fired a 641 (307-334) to finish with a 69-over par for the tournament. Wittenberg University won the Classic and finished with a 24-over-par 586, Host DePauw University finished in second place at 613, while the College of Wooster finished third at 615. The medalist was Wittenberg's Jared Wissinger, who finished with a three-under 139.
The Lions were led by senior Matt Stiens (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle) and junior Stephen Beamer (Cincinnati, OH/Madiera), who each finished the two-day event at 12-over par, 155. Stiens and Beamer both came out strong with opening day 1-over par 73's, but both finished out with 11-over par 82s.
Three Lions finished in a tie for 51st place, as Danny Gravett (Cincinnati, OH/SPCA) had the individual score that added to the Mount's team score. Junior Drew Nichols (Chillictohe, OH/Unioto) and Senior Ben Schneider (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle), both playing as individuals, also finished in 51st at 164, 19-over par.
The Lions will have one more competition for the fall season. On Monday, October 28th the Lions will begin the two-day Cameo Pizza Battle at the Brook in Sandusky, Ohio. The Lions open their spring season in Dataw Island, South Carolina where they will compete in the TaylorMade-Adidas Invitational.
