Each week during the 2012 cross country season a Mount men's runner will be highlighted.
This week's spotlight runner is junior Jonathan Mathis (Cincinnati, OH/Roger Bacon).
Get to know Jonathan Mathis. . . .
What is your major and why does it interest you? Athletic training is my major and it interests me because I like to be around sports and enjoy interacting with people and helping them get better.
What is your favorite place on campus? The AT clinic haha
What is your earliest track & field memory? I remember being in the 4x800m for the first time. . . it wasn’t a good race
What is the toughest meet you ever competed in? Honestly, The Winton Woods course from high school. It was always hot and really hilly.
What is the most important thing you’ve learned while playing at the College of Mount St. Joseph? I have learned about teamwork and that winning is achieved by working as a team.
What is your favorite Coach Tina AND/OR Coach Jamie saying? We are a respectable team!!
What is one thing you want to happen before you leave the College of Mount St. Joseph? I want to be clinician of the year. It’s a big deal to me.
What do your fellow students always want to know? Everyone always asks how far we run and how they could never do it. I think is funny.
When you were younger, what were you always getting in trouble for? I was always in trouble in school for talking, I was pretty well behaved at home though.
What is your favorite food in the Fifth-Third dining hall? Haha I like fritter Fridays. Those are usually good.
If Hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to see play you in the lead role? I would love to have Jared Leto to play me. He played
prefontaine in the title movie and he is just a cool guy. Although, im nowhere near as fast as prefontaine.
If you weren’t competing in Track & Field, what sport would you be playing? Well, if we had a swim team, I would go for that.
Who has been the most influential on your life and why? Lots of people. My old coaches and friends, but mostly my parents. They shaped me into who I am today.
What song on your iPod would surprise people? Hmm, that would probably be the Gorillaz. Totally underrated band
What was your best Halloween costume growing up? Best one ever was a psycho. My dad rolled me around on a push cart, lol.
If Coach Tina AND/OR Coach Jamie were not coaching, what would they be doing for a living? They would definitely be living their lives, having fun and all that.
What is your favorite video game of all-time to play? Oh gosh, I did love guitar hero when it came out.
What is your favorite nickname for a teammate? Um, I think choo-choo is the best.
Who is your favorite professor on campus and what class do they teach? I like all my athletic training teachers. It’s hard to pick (I don’t want to upset any of them, haha).
