The Lions connected on 55 percent of the their shots from the field in the opening half, hitting six three-pointers, and controlled the boards, as they went on to an 87-70 win at Transylvania University on Wednesday ngiht in the HCAC opener for both teams. The Mount, 4-2 overall, 1-0 in the HCAC, next hosts conference-foe Defiance College on Dec. 7.

The Mount raced out to a 10-0 lead against the Pioneers, and a basket by Femi Thompson (Cincinnati, OH/Aiken) with 11:47 on the first half clock gave the Lions a commanding 20-4 advantage. The Lions would enter the locker room at the intermission up by a 49-34 advantage, as they conected on 55 percent of their shots to Transy's 40 percent field goal shooting accuracy. THe Lions also held a 22-9 advantage in the rebounding department in the first half.

The Lions would continue to widen their lead during the second half, going up by 23 points, 60-37, just 2:29 into the half when Mark Allen (Cincinnati, OH/Northwest) scored on a fast break lay-up. The closest the Pioneers would come to within the Mount would be 17 points, 86-69 with 2:40 play. The Mount would shoot 52 percent from the field in the game, and convert 10-of-26 three-point attempts. The also recorded 40 rebounds and forced 12 turnovers.

All five Mount starters finished with double-digit scoring, with Ken Kunkel (Cincinnati, OH/Colerain) leading the way with 20 points, six rebounds and six assists. Thompson chipped in 18 points and a game-high nine rebounds while Joel Scudder (Greendale, IN/South Dearborn) had 14 points and five assists.
