The College of Mount St. Joseph men's basketball team saw their 2012-2013 season come to an end on Tuesday night in Lexington, KY, as the sixth-seeded Lions fell to third-seeded Transylvania University, 75-57. The Mount, which was playing it first HCAC Tournament game since 2006, ends the season with a 9-17 overall mark.
The Pioneers started out strong in the game, racing out to an 18-8 lead just 7:37 into the match-up, before the Lions responded with stellar outside shooting. The Mount closed the deficit tio 23-21, with 7:50 to play when Donald Bush (Cincinnati, OH/North College Hill) connected on a three-point shot. Transy held a one or two-point advanage over the next few minutes of the first half, before Joel Scudder (Greendale, IN/South Dearborn) gave the Mount their first lead of the game, 32-30 when he made a shot from behind the three-point arc. After a 32-all tie, and a Transy two-point lead, with 1:04 to play, David Mann (Fairfield, OH/Cincinnatii Christian) made a three-pointer with 24 seconds left in the half to give the Mount a 35-34 lead. Transy hit a three-point shot of their own, with seven seconds left in the half, to take a 37-35 lead into the locker room. The Mount out-shot Transy, 65- to 59 percent from the field in the first half, making seven-of-10 from long range. Scudder led the way with 11 points while Mann and Travis Combs (Manchester, OH/Manchester) added seven, first-half points each.
Transy turned up the defensive pressure again in the second half, and behind a strong inside attack, pushed their lead out to 46-35 by the 16:20 mark. Bush got the Lions to within five points, 46-41, with 14:26 when he made his second, three-pointer of the game, but the Mount would get no closer. The Pioneers used a relentless inside scoring and rebounding force, hitting 16-of-17 second half free throws, and out-rebounding the Lions, 16-4 over the game's final 20 minutes of play, to post the win, their third over the Mount this season.
Combs finished with a team-high 16 points, while Scudder added 11 points and four rebounds, and Bush chipped in 10 points. The Lions suffered 14 turnovers in the game, and forced seven Transy miscues. The Mount out-shot their opponents, 57 to 55 percent from the field.
