Host Defiance College converted 58 of its shot attempts from the field, and made 88 percent from the free throw line, as they rolled to an 77-61 victory over the Mount on Saturday afternoon. The Lions, 5-10 overall, 4-4 in the conference, will be back in HCAC action on Jan. 16 when they play at Transylvania University.
The Yellow Jackets led from the opening tip throughout the first half, as they rolled to a 26-14 lead just 12 1/2 minutes into the game. Defiance entered the locker room at the half ahead 40-26 thanks to out-scoring the Lions, 22-14 in the paint and getting 15 points from their bench, while the Lions received only four points from their reserves. DC out-shot the Mount, 58 to 44 percent from the field in the opening half of play, as the Lions struggled to find the basket from long range, hitting only one-of-10 shots from behind the three-point arc.
The Lions made a brief run at the lead early in the second half, cutting the deficit to 44-38 when Travis Combs (Manchester, OH/Manchester) made a lay-up with 15:33 on the clock. Defiance, however, would rally thanks to red-hot shooting, and bolt out to a 55-40 lead with 11:25 on the clock. The Lions would get the disadvantage down to under 10 points just one more time the remainder of the game, 58-49 with 7:55 when David Mann (Fairfield, OH/Cincinnati Christian) hit a jump shot. The Yellow Jackets would lead by as much as 20 points with just under two minutes on the game clock. DC completed their second straight half of shooting 58 percent from the field, while controlling the boards in the game, 34-16.
Joel Scudder (Greendale, IN/South Dearborn) and Mann each fired in 13 points for the Mount, while teammate Jacob Daniels (Peebles, OH/Peebles) added 11 points. Daniels also had four rebounds, three assists and four steals. Scudder made three of the Lions' six, three-point field goals in the game. Defiance committed eight turnovers while the Lions' had seven turnovers in the game.
