The Mount’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) recently presented the following awards at the Student Life Awards Recognition ceremony to the following student-athletes for their athletic performances this year. This was the first year that SAAC has given out these awards.
Nicole Sherpensky (Cincinnati, OH/Northwest), a senior, has been named the SAAC Female Athletic Performer of the Year Award winner. Sherpensky was named to the HCAC First Team in 2013. She earned her 1000th career kill this past season, and set a single-season HCAC record for assist blocks this past fall with 36. She also had 141 total blocks this season bringing her career total to 359 making her number five all-time in blocks at the Mount.
Wayne Black (Indianapolis, IN/Pike), a senior, has been named the SAAC Male Athletic Performer of the Year Award winner. Black was an NCAA All-American for the 2013-14 season, finishing in eighth place at the NCAA Division III National Championship. He recorded three straight 30-plus win seasons, finishing this past winter with 36 victories, has the school record for most major decisions in a season, and is fourth all-time for takedowns in a season and fifth all-time in pins during a season.
Denzel Norvell (Dayton, OH/Thurgood Marshall) has been named the SAAC Freshman Athlete of the Year. Norvell was second on the Lions in 2013 in receptions, with 36 for 189 yards, and as a kickoff returner averaged 19.5 yards per return, best on the team. In addition, he was named HCAC All-Conference.
