The College of Mount St. Joseph lost a doubleheader to Hanover College on Saturday evening to finish their season. The setbacks end the Lions' 2014 season record at 12-25-1 overall, 7-18 in the HCAC. The two wins for the Panthers gives them a 3-0 series sweep of the Lions.
The Lions fell behind 3-0 in the first inning of game one, before getting a run back in the top of the second. Ronald Cotton (Florence, KY/Boone County) led off the inning with a walk. He later stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Drew Werner (Sunman, IN/East Central) singled home Cotton to get the scoring started for the Lions.
The Lions took their only lead in the top of the fifth going ahead 4-3. Alec Schmidt (Cincinnati, OH/LaSalle) led the inning off with a single to right field. With two outs, Michael Leytze (Cincinnati, OH/LaSalle) singled to shortstop and Nick Browning (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin) reached on a hit by pitch bringing up Cotton. Cotton rocketed a double to deep right field to clear the bases and give the Lions the lead.
The Panthers scored once in the fourth and twice in the fifth to take a 6-4 lead. The Lions came back to tie the game on a two-run double to left center by Tyler Pasch (Nicholasville, KY/West Jessamine). The Lions were held scoreless in the ninth before giving up a run in the bottom on the ninth to fall, 7-6. Collin Shaw (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) started and threw six innings for the Lions, only allowing two earned runs. Nathan Lambert (Lawrenceburg, IN/Lawrenceburg) threw a hitless seventh, and Alex Cole (Ross, OH/Ross) added a hitless eighth for the Lions.
In game two the Lions started strong taking a 2-0 lead in the first on singles by Leytze and Rob Shaw (West Chester, OH/Lakota West). The Lions added another in the second on a triple by Casey Wagner (West Harrison, IN/Franklin County) bringing home Alec Schmidt to take a 3-0 lead. The Lions gave up seven runs in the bottom of the second, however, to fall behind 7-3. The Panthers added six more in the third to take a 13-3 lead. Matt Hofmann (Cincinnati, OH/Elder) added a double in the sixth for the Lions. The game was called after seven innings, due to the ten-run rule.
Cole added 3.1 scoreless innings for the Lions in relief in game two. Cotton had a stolen base in each game of the doubleheader. Leytze had two hits to lead the offense.
