The College of Mount St. Joseph baseball teams dropped a twin-bill at Bluffton on Saturday. The Lions could only muster four runs and nine hits in the two games. The loss drops the Lions to 12-21-1 overall and 7-15 in the HCAC. The win takes Bluffton to 20-16, 12-20 in the HCAC. The two wins on Saturday for Bluffton gives them a 2-1 series edge over the Lions.
The Beavers jumped out to a 3-0 in the second inning of game one behind three singles and a Mount error. The Lions were hitless until the fourth inning when Ronald Cotton (Florence, KY/Boone County) finally singled. He followed that up with a steal of second, before being stranded on third. The Lions continued to struggle with the bats before getting on the board in the sixth inning. Cotton reached base again on a HBP, before advancing to second on a third by Michael Gill (Burlington, KY/Conner), and scoring on a throwing error. Kyle Vennemeier (Harrison, OH/Harrison) got the last hit of the day for the Lions in the seventh.
Collin Shaw (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) threw five innings for the Lions in the first game, giving up three runs, all unearned on six hits.
Game two started better for the Lions going ahead 1-0 in the second inning. Cotton walked to lead off the inning, eventually coming around to score on a sacrifice fly by Matt Hoffman (Cincinnati, OH/Elder). The Beavers tied the game up in the third on a solo home run by David Ianiro. Bluffton put up two more runs in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead, adding another in the sixth and the seventh to take a 5-1 advantage.
The Lions put up two in the eighth to close the gap to 5-3. Gill scored after walking and being moved to third on a double by Braden Alcorn (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills). Derek Allen (New Alsace, IN/East Central) drew a bases loaded walk to bring home Gill. Casey Wagner (New Harrison, IN/Franklin County) singled to bring home another run with two outs. The Lions left the baseball loaded in the eighth before a scoreless ninth.
Alex Cole (Ross, OH/Ross) started and took the loss for the Lions after throwing 4+ innings giving up three runs, two of them earned. Drew Ernst (Cincinnati, OH/Elder) threw a perfect eighth for the Lions.
The Mount will face Ohio Northern Wednesday, April 30th at the University of Cincinnati's Marge Schott Stadium. The game will be the last home game for five College of Mount St. Joseph seniors. The game will begin at 6 p.m. with senior day activates being held before the game.
