Anderson University used a big scoring inning in each game on Sunday, as they recorded a doubleheader sweep over the Lions, 6-4 and 12-7, and a 3-0 mark over the weekend. The Mount, 6-11-1 overall, 1-5 in the HCAC, will be back in action on April 1 with a game at conference-rival Earlham College.
In game one, the Ravens plated single runs in the first and second innings, as the Mount cut the deficit to 2-1 in the fourth inning, thanks to a sacrifice fly RBI by Ronald Cotton (Florence, KY/Boone County), scoring Tyler Haubner (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle). Anderson upped its lead to 6-1 in the seventh, scoring four runs on five hits and a Mount error. Michael Leytze (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle) had a two-run single in the eighth to make the score 6-3 and Nick Browning scored on a fielder's choice, making the score 6-4 after the Lions' at-bat in the eighth. The Mount got a runner on first base in the ninth, but could not score him.
Michael Gill (Burlington, KY/Conner), Kyle Vennemeier (Harrison, OH/Harrison), and Leytze each had two hits, while Cotton drove in two runs and Haubner recorded three walks. Chase Stevens (Harrison, OH/Harrison) started for the Mount and suffered the loss, going 6 2/3 innings, allowing four earned runs and registering nine Ks. Paul Spaulding (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle) tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings.
The Mount led game two 1-0 after the second inning, only to see Anderson plate four runs in the fourth inning, with the key hits being a two-run double and a two-run single. The Lions rebounded to grab back the lead in the top of the fifth, 5-4, as Casey Wagner (West Harrison, KY/Franklin County) had a two-run double and Cotton blasted a two-run home run, his team-high fourth round-tripper of the season. Anderson added runs in each of the next three innings, and held a 11-5 advantage entering the eight inning. Taylor Alley (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) and Gill added late game RBI for the Mount. Wagner helped lead the Mount in game two with two hits and two RBI, while Cotton had three runs scored, two hits, two RBI and two walks. Drew Werner (Sunman, IN/East Central) had two hits. Brandon Polking (Cincinnati, OH/St. Xavier) started the night-cap, pitched five innings and was tagged with the loss. He was relieved by Matt Hoffman (Cincinnati, OH/Elder) and Drew Ernst (Cincinnati, OH/Elder). Anderson out-hit the Mount, 13-9 in game two.
