Visiting Centre College broke open a tie game in the fifth inning with back-to-back four-run innings on Wednesday night, as they downed the Mount, 12-3 at Freedom Field in Florence, KY. The Lions, 4-6-1 overall, returns to action on Mar. 21 when they begin HCAC play with the opening game of a three-game home series against Franklin College.
The Colonels plated two runs in the top of the first inning of the game, to grab a 2-0 lead but the Lions cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the inning, thanks to an RBI single by Derek Allen (New Alsace, IN/East Central). The Mount knotted the score at two-all in the next inning, when Rob Shaw (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) scored on a wild pitch. Centre, however, would rebound to record two straight innings, the fifth and sixth, of four runs each, thanks to extra base hitting. The Mount would get one more run in the game, in the seventh inning when Michael Leytze (Cincinnati, OH/La Salle) scored.
Centre doubled the Mount in hits, 18-9 for the game. Nick Browning (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin), Allen and Leytze each had two hits for the Lions. Davis Schaefer (Hamilton, OH/Lakota West) suffered the loss. He was followed to the mound by four relievers.
