Former Mount pitcher and 2011 graduate Steve Matre has signed a contract to play for the Florence (KY) Freedom. The Freedom are a member of the West Division of the Frontier League, an independent baseball league.

Matre, a 6-foot-three, 200-pound right-hander out of Purcell Marian High School, recently turned 25 years old. He was drafted while at the College by the Los Angeles Dodgers, and played in their farm system. Matre played in 2012 for the Gary (IN) Southshore Rail Cats, pitching in five games, all as a reliever, throwing 2 1/3 innings. Southshore is also in the Frontier League.

Matre amassed three of the top four season save marks in Mount history during his collegiate career, and holds the program record of 32. He also has the top mark for the Lions in career appearances with 59 and in ERA with a 1.19 (minimum 50 innings pitched).
