Visiting Spalding University scored an unearned run in the fifth inning, grabbing a 3-0 lead, and hung on Tuesday evening to pin a 3-1 loss on the Lions. The Mount, 8-25 overall, moves on to a season ending three-game HCAC series starting on May 3 at conference-leader Manchester University.
The Golden Eagles scored a run in the third and added two more runs in the fifth inning off Mount starter Jacob Hoying (Russia, OH/Russia), while their pitching was keeping the Lions off the scoreboard until the eight inning. Drew Werner (Sunman, IN/East Central) plated teammate Zak Wagner (Cincinnati, OH/Roger Bacon) to make the score 3-1, but the Lions would end the inning with the bases loaded. After holding Spalding scoreless in the ninth inning, the Mount got a two-out single from Jonathan Roberts (Heborn, KY/Conner) in the bottom of the inning but was unable to put any more runs on the board as their final batter struck out.
Cole Wendeln (Florence, KY/Boone County) and Roberts had two hits each for the Mount, who had eight hits as a team. The Mount stranded 11 runners on base in the game, and committed four errros, allowing their opponent two, unearned runs. Hoying pitched seven innings in the game, and was relieved by Mitch Morgan (Cincinnati, OH/Northwest) and Nathan Lambert (Lawrenceburg, IN/Lawrenceburg), who tossed one inning each.
