Collin Shaw (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) won his first game of the season, 9-3, before the Lions dropped the second game of the doubleheader, 5-0, settling for a split against the Franklin College Grizzlies on Saturday. The Lions, 7-21 overall, 3-13 in the HCAC, will be back in action on April 23 when they host Transylvania University at UC's Marge Schott Stadium.
Shaw tossed a complete game against Franklin College in the opener, allowing just one earned run while strking out five batters. The Lions led by a 5-0 score after batting in the third inning, as five different batters each collected an RBI. Drew Werner and Jonathan Roberts each collected their second RBI in the game by the ninth inning, giving the Mount a 9-1 lead. The Grizzlies would leave 12 runners on base in the game against Shaw. The Mount's offense, which produced 11 hits, was led by Spencer Gommel (Greensburg, IN/Oldenburg Academy), who had three hits, while teammate Zak Wagner (Cincinnati, OH/Roger Bacon), Taylor Alley (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills), and Ben Seeger (Reading, OH/Reading) recorded two hits each. Franklin College committed three errors in the game, leading to three unearned runs.
A strong pitching effort by the Grizzlies in game two produced 15 strikeouts, and a two-hit shutout. Both of the Lions' hits were registered by Taylor Simpson (Monroe, OH/Monroe). The Lions also worked Franklin pitching for four walks, as the Grizzlies bolted out to a 4-0 lead in the third inning. Every Mount startiing player suffered at least one strikeout in the game. Brandon Polking (Cincinnati, OH/St. Xavier) pitched a complete game for the Mount, allowing four earned runs.
