The College of Mount St. Joseph grabbed an early lead in Sunday's final game of a three-game HCAC home series against Bluffton University, but allowed the game-tying run in the ninth inning, en route to a 19-7 to the Beavers. The Mount, 6-19 overall, 2-11 in the confernce, returns to HCAC play on April 16 when they play at Earlham College.
The Beavers scored the first runs of the game, rolling out to a 3-0 lead after two innings of play, only to see the Mount score five times in the fourth inning, giving the Lions a 6-4 advantage. Taylor Alley (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) had a two-run single in the fourth inning, to spark the rally. Bluffton, however, tied the game at six-all in the fifth inning, before Drew Werner (Sunman, IN/East Central) gave the Lions a 7-6 lead in the seventh inning on an RBI groundout. Bluffton would push across the tying run, at seven-all, in the ninth, on a two-out RBI single. The Mount then left Werner, the potential winning run, stranded at second base in the bottom of the inning. Bluffton wrapped up the series sweep by scoring 12 times in the top of the 10th inning, recording nine hits. The Mount committed four of their five errors in the game, in the final inning.
Werner led the Lions' 11-hit attack with three hits, whle Alley and Spencer Gommel (Greensburg, IN/Oldenburg Academy) chipped in two hits each. Taylor Simpson (Monroe, OH/Monroe) had two RBI in game. Chase Stevens (Harrison, OH/Harrison) started on the mound for the Lions, and was followed by three relievers. Chris Bruckman (Huber Heights, OH/Chaminade-Julienne) suffered the defeat, slipping to 1-3 on the season.
